During the middle and late stages of the of war, strains on British manpower led to the compulsory service laws where all British males entered into the armed forces to a two year term of service. For those assigned to the ground component of the British Army this included a 14 month tour in Northern France, North Africa or in Southeast Asia. Most late was british units consisted heavily of conscripts, however, certain "all volunteer regiments" continued to exist throughout the conflict.
